Tia L. Flores - Pyrographer

I view my artwork as a creative interaction with Mother Nature by simply accenting its natural beauty while maintaining the individual uniqueness of the calabaza.  Spurred by a desire to know more about my ancestors, my creations have evolved into a new area of culturally themed gourds, including vessels, drums, masks, totems and jewelry.

My designs are a reflection of my two families.  From my maternal grandmother, Louise, I am greatly influenced by the vast beauty of the Nevada desert; and from my paternal grandmother, Anastacia, I am drawn to the rich cultures of the Aztec and Navajo people and their love of the earth.

I grew up in Las Vegas, back when the desert was home to more creatures than people.  We lived in a small neighborhood on the north edge of town just below the Red Rock Mountains.  My younger brothers and I spent the majority of our summers exploring the vast terrain of the Nevada desert constructing elaborate forts and collecting various desert reptiles.

Teaching in the Amazon Jungle

In 2018, I was invited by my friend, Barbara Land, the founder of Nevada Building Hope Foundation to travel to Peru to work with a group of women in the remote Ayacucho river village deep in the Amazon jungle.

This life changing adventure provided me the opportunity to assist the women in creating a sustainable craft to help support their familys' incomes and the village's economy.  I was able to return to Ayacucho in 2019 and again in 2020.

Visit NevadaBuildingHopeFoundation.org to learn more about their humanitarian work being done in the Amazon.

Stand barefoot upon the brown belly

of our Earth Mother and feel our presence.

All those who came before you

and those who have yet to come.

We are the past, present and future.

Together we stand barefoot upon the brown belly of our beloved Earth Mother and we are one.

The snake and butterfly symbolize transmutation and transformation.  The anaconda is the largest snake in the Amazon Rainforest.  The Blue Morpho is one of the largest butterflies in the world and can be easily spotted fluttering around the Amazon jungle.
